Director-writer-producer Mina Laamo founded Koko Production in 2017.
MINA LAAMO has been active in film since 2001. She graduated from the Department of Film, Television and Scenography of the Aalto University with a Master of Arts (Art and Design) degree, majoring in Documentary Film, and a Bachelor of Arts (Art and Design) degree in Film and Television Production. In addition to this, she holds a Master of Arts degree from University of Helsinki where she had two majors in cultural studies: Competitive Literature and Gender Studies, completing a joint thesis for both.
Mina Laamo is known for the creative documentaries Sorrow Tamers (Surunkesyttäjät, 2022), Becoming Me (Matka minuksi, 2015) and The Pests (Tuholaiset, 2007). In her films she has explored grief, the sense of inadequacy, and fear of otherness. Her media art installation Four Trick Pony, co-created with Pia Andell, exhibited at the Turku Art Museum in 2020–2021. The work also exhibited at Laterna Magica Helsinki in the autumn of 2024. At the moment, she is in the development process of a documentary film entitled A Nature Documentary on Dying Birds.
In addition to film and media art, Mina Laamo has completed several film influencing campaigns in cooperation with various organisations. The influencing campaigns have intended to spark change in society in accommodating emotions and approval reaction of them to increase the well-being of people.
VALUES
I believe that the process of documentary film art is always interconnected with driving change in society and cultural activism, with the purpose of making the world a better place through film. In my films, change often takes place internally, through self-knowledge, because I believe that our potential for change and changing the world is much greater than we think or than we usually come to believe. Great change often starts with a tiny realisation.
